Thank you, Sheela. I would like to know about ways to keep fit and healthy!
Sheela this TFL seems to be a wonderful concept. It would be great to have a similar arrangement in Ooty.My best wishes to you for all your good work.
Great initiative, Sheel. All of us need this!
Sounds good. But why is the male of the species excluded? If you look around you see many more low hanging bellies than low waisted jeans! But yes the holistic approach to fitness is the only one that delivers a healthy body!it’s a great initiative
Dear Everyone,
Although it started as a program for only women (being an Obgyn), it has evolved to including both men and women, because as Ashok rightly pointed out – the men seriously need help too.I have some male clients, who seem to be doing well.
Here is an Article I read in Forbes on picking the right gym!! May be of interest to your readers. Personally I prefer the outdoors but that’s because the gyms I’ve been to take little to no interest in educating people on choosing the right routine to follow. So you end up walking in, getting on to the treadmill or the exercycle, completing your 30-40 mins of working out, doing a few bar bells (not dumb belles!) and then leaving. I’ve seen this happening even in so called 5 Star Hotels that claim to have professional trainers on board. Sheel’s TFL will hopefully be different.
Cheers
Ashok

The end of daylight savings time and the onset of winter weather can discourage even the most well-intentioned outdoorsman from exercising.
But there’s no need to pack on the pounds. Instead of skipping that daily run because of cold temperatures or inclement weather, it might be time to consider investing in a gym membership.
You won’t be alone. The coming months comprise the second busiest quarter for new memberships, according to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association. There are roughly 11,500 more gyms than five years ago, including ones with cutting-edge equipment, spa services, and age- and gender-specific clientele. The numerous options may seem overwhelming, but finding the right gym is a sound investment of time, money and energy.

“Walking into a gym is like walking onto a car lot,” says Myatt Murphy, co-author of The Men’s Health Gym Bible. “You’re the center of attention until the ink is signed.”
To resist the many temptations membership representatives frequently dangle before a prospective client, it’s important to arm yourself with a clear understanding of your personal fitness goals, a realistic estimate of the financial and personal commitment you are willing to make, and a list of which gym features are most important to your workout.
Matching Fitness Goals With The Right Gym
Whether you’re moving a regular workout indoors or creating a new exercise routine from scratch, avoid simply joining the first gym with the shiniest logo and longest row of equipment.

Instead, think about how a gym’s available amenities can complement your existing level of fitness. A marathoner or cyclist, Murphy says, should consider whether a gym is staffed with running or cycling experts. If weight loss is a primary goal, then seek out a club that caters less to the endurance athlete and more to similarly-minded gym goers likely to take advantage of fat-burning classes and an on-site dietitian or nutritionist.
If you’re unsure about personal fitness goals, consult with a physician or meet with a trainer who can incorporate both health and fitness issues into a personalized workout plan.
Location, Money, Time
Since few gym memberships come without strings attached, location, money and time are important factors to consider before signing away several hundred dollars.
The convenience of location should be a crucial aspect of deciding on a gym, says exercise physiologist Richard Cotton. “It’s always a good idea to choose a club near work, near home or on the commute in between,” he says.
Unrealistic or overly ambitious exercise plans have certainly cost members before. A 2006 study by professors of economics and business at UC Berkeley and Stanford evaluated the contract and attendance choices of 7,752 gym members over a three-year period and found that people routinely purchased memberships disproportionate to their attendance rate. Those who paid a flat monthly fee of over $70 frequented the gym less than 4.5 times per month, essentially paying more than $17 per visit when a cheaper $10 day pass was available.
When exploring membership packages, inquire about pricing options and hidden charges, but also be honest about the frequency of your workouts in order to find the best fit for your lifestyle and pocketbook.
The Background Check
From childcare to personal trainers to engaging classes, most gyms feature enticing services–but it’s important to test-drive as many of them as possible. Assessing the competency and experience of the staff should be a primary factor. Cotton, also the national director of certification for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), recommends inquiring about the educational and certification levels of staff members, particularly trainers.
“There’s the continuum of personal trainers and fitness professionals,” Cotton says. There are seven top-level credentialing organizations, including the ACSM and the American Council on Exercise, that are well-known for demanding standards.
Staff members with bachelor degrees in kinesiology, physical education or exercise physiology are also qualified to field complex questions about fitness routines and health issues. When touring a facility, be sure to watch staff members interact with clients, and be aggressive in asking about experience and background.
Take the same inquisitive and hands-on approach when evaluating classes, equipment and other aspects of the facility. Many gyms will allow potential members to try the club for one day at no charge or for a nominal fee, which is essential to informing your final decision.
“Most people have a semblance of an idea of what they need to motivate themselves,” says Murphy. “Don’t be distracted by the bells and whistles–focus on what you know you need to exercise.”
